01 · Pitch

20-second pitch

The FX5 is Sony's newest Cinema Line camera, announced July 22, 2026, and it brings a VENICE 2-style workflow — internal 16-bit RAW, open-gate recording, and a Multi-Function dial borrowed from Sony's flagship cinema cameras — into a body the size of the FX3. Important: Sony postponed its release on September 17, 2026, and says units won't ship before late October 2026 at the earliest — be upfront about that with any customer before taking an order.

Who is the customer?

Working filmmakers who want a VENICE-style RAW workflow in a compact body FX6 owners or renters wanting more portability without losing open-gate RAW Buyers moving up from the FX3 or FX3A who need internal RAW recording Productions that can work without SDI output Customers willing to wait for the postponed release — set expectations clearly

02 · Specs

Five FX5 specs to memorize

  1. An all-new 16.6MP effective full-frame stacked BSI sensor (Exmor RS) — Sony's first RAW-capable compact Cinema Line body, replacing the 12.1MP sensor shared by the FX3, FX3A, and FX6.
  2. Internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW recording plus open-gate 3:2 capture up to 5K/60p — a first for this size and price tier — alongside standard XAVC HS and XAVC S.
  3. No internal ND filter and no SDI output — real, reviewer-flagged omissions compared to the FX6, which has both.
  4. A new NP-SA100 battery that is not backward-compatible with the FX3, FX3A, or FX6's NP-FZ100 — a real switching cost for existing Cinema Line owners.
  5. Sony postponed the release on September 17, 2026, citing production-related circumstances; units are not expected before late October 2026 at the earliest — confirm current availability before promising a ship date.

03 · Signature feature

The feature that sells it: VENICE 2-style RAW workflow in an FX3-sized body

Internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW and open-gate recording used to mean stepping up to a much larger, more expensive cinema camera. The FX5 brings that workflow, plus a Multi-Function dial and menu logic inherited from the FX6 and VENICE 2, into a body that's barely larger than the FX3 — without an internal ND filter or SDI output, which is the honest trade-off for the smaller size.

What to tell a customer about timing

Be upfront that the camera is real, announced, and orderable, but Sony postponed shipping on September 17, 2026, with units not expected before late October 2026 at the earliest. Don't promise a firm date — check current status before taking a deposit or quoting an arrival window.

04 · Video

Video: open-gate 5K/60p internal RAW — confirm current firmware before promising every mode

Internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW plus open-gate 3:2 recording up to 5K/60p, with 4K/4.5K up to 120p and Full HD up to 240p also announced. S-Log3 with 15+ stops of claimed dynamic range. One hands-on reviewer has reported that the highest frame-rate modes (5K/120p, 4K/240p) may be firmware-gated until 2027 rather than available at launch — this conflicts with the original announcement and should be treated as unconfirmed until verified against current firmware.

Practical starting settings

Demo units may not be available yet given the postponed release — check with a manager before promising an in-store demo. Once available, start with 4K/30p open-gate XAVC to show the wider aspect ratio without needing RAW-capable playback equipment.

05 · Discovery & demo

Ten discovery questions

  1. Is timing flexible, given the release has been postponed to late October at the earliest?
  2. Do you need internal RAW, or has 10-bit XAVC been enough for your workflow so far?
  3. Are you currently shooting on the FX3, FX3A, or FX6?
  4. How important is an internal ND filter to how you shoot?
  5. Do you need SDI output for multi-camera or video-village monitoring?
  6. What's your budget, and how does it compare to the FX6?
  7. Do you need a viewfinder or XLR handle — note they can't be used together on this camera
  8. Are you comparing this against Canon's C50?
  9. How do you feel about a new, non-backward-compatible battery standard?
  10. What's frustrating about your current camera's recording format or dynamic range?

Five-minute sales-floor demo

  1. Confirm current availability before anything else. Check with a manager whether a demo unit or customer stock has arrived. The release was postponed; don't demo or promise around a unit that may not be in-store yet.
  2. Show the open-gate aspect ratio. Frame a shot in 3:2 open gate and explain how it allows reframing for multiple deliverables.A visually clear way to show a feature no FX3-generation camera offers.
  3. Explain the RAW workflow honestly. Describe X-OCN RAW file sizes and the editing workflow it requires.Sets accurate expectations rather than overselling RAW to a customer who may not need it.
  4. Point out the missing internal ND and SDI. Mention both directly if the customer's workflow depends on either.Builds trust by naming the real trade-offs versus the FX6 up front.
  5. Show the Multi-Function dial and menu layout. Compare it to the FX6 or VENICE 2 if the customer has used either.Demonstrates the professional workflow lineage that's part of this camera's core appeal.

06 · Objections

Common objections and answers

"Why isn't this in stock yet?"

Sony postponed the release on September 17, 2026, citing production-related circumstances, with units expected no earlier than late October 2026. It's a real, currently-announced product, just not shipping yet.

"No internal ND filter seems like a big omission at this price."

It is a genuine trade-off reviewers have flagged — if built-in ND matters most, the FX6 is the better fit; the FX5 trades it for a smaller body and internal RAW.

"No SDI output is a problem for my multi-camera setup."

That's accurate and worth knowing before ordering — the FX6 offers SDI if that's a hard requirement.

"Why not just buy the FX3A or wait for the FX6 instead?"

The FX3A is proven and available today but has no internal RAW or open-gate recording; the FX6 has internal ND and SDI but costs nearly double. The FX5 sits deliberately between the two on capability and price.

"The new battery isn't compatible with my existing Sony batteries."

Correct — it uses the new NP-SA100, not the NP-FZ100 used across the FX3, FX3A, and FX6. Factor that into the total cost of switching or adding this body to an existing kit.

Closing question: "If timing works with the postponed release, would having VENICE 2-style RAW and open-gate recording in a body this size change how you'd plan your next production?"

Lead with the release timing before anything else — don't let a customer fall in love with a camera you can't hand them today.
